It’s a fun challenge because we’ll be cleaning round objects that are more than two stories high, including the roofs! Over time, the tanks had become infested with mould and mildew, as well as accumulated a significant amount of dirt.

There is a slight dome on the roofs to allow rainwater to drain off, but they are almost flat. Black mould and mildew thrive in moist conditions, and the roofs had high spots and low spots that allowed water to accumulate and settle.

In order to prevent the mould and mildew from spreading back down the tank’s sides, the roofs must be kept clean and free of live growth. The black buildup on the tanks’ sides necessitated the use of a stronger detergent than a typical green buildup.

However, we have a lot of experience with this type of project, so we were able to handle it without a hitch.

With the exception of one location, we were able to clean all of the locations in just one day. Electrostatic bonding was used to attach the stripes to the paint in one location….

As rainwater flows down the gutter in the same direction over and over again, it electrostatically charges the dirt, causing it to stick to the metal and paint. We need to use a non-hydroxide based degreaser to break the bond to remove or lighten these stripes. On a tank that’s about 35 feet tall, this is a huge undertaking! All the challenges have been overcome and the tanks look great and the paint will now last longer, saving Sugar Land residents money for years to come!
